What Are Trailer Suspension Parts?
The suspension of your trailer is made up of seven key components. They are the Leaf Springs, the Hangers, the U-Bolts, the Bushings, the Equalizers, the Tie-Plates, and the Shackle Links.
Most trailers will either have Slipper or Double-eye Leaf Springs.Your Trailer Suspension Parts are designed to accomplish three simple tasks. First, it attaches the axle to the trailer. Second, it reduces the effects of rough terrain. Third, it acts as a cushion for the cargo being towed.
Slipper Leaf Spring Suspensions
Slipper Leaf Springs have an eye in one end and a reversed curve at the other end. The eye is attached to the Front Hanger with a nut and bolt. The reversed curve end of the spring is attached at the Rear Hanger with a 'keeper bolt' that keeps the spring fastened when the trailer is jacked up for servicing.
The U-Bolts are fastened to the Tie-Plates to hold the springs to the axle. The Equalizers are fastened to the Hangers and the Springs. The Leaf Spring absorbs the punishment of the road by straightening from its curved initial position. This is facilitated by the reverse curved end sliding back and forth in the Rear Hanger. Your Trailer Suspension Parts work as a moving system to give your trailer a smooth ride.
Double-Eye Leaf Spring Suspensions
Double-Eye Leaf Springs have eyes at both ends of the spring. Each eye is fitted with an anti-friction bushing to reduce wear. The Leaf Springs are fastened to the axle with U-Bolts and Tie-Plates. The Shackle Bolts fasten the Leaf Springs to the front and rear Hangers. The Hangers are welded to the trailer.
The Central Hanger is welded to the trailer at one end and has an Equalizer at the other. The Shackle Links are bolted to both the Equalizer and the Leaf Springs. It is the Shackle Links that allow the Leaf Springs to straighten and recoil. It is this moving system that absorbs the shocks of the terrain.
